Byron rain with Chloe Campbell
My first shoot on my north trip was in Byron with Chloe Campbell. Chloe had shown up in my explore feed, and I’d contacted her and Saint Models to organise this shoot. We wanted to stay away from shooting just another swim look. Chloe wanted to show off her versatility, and the beautiful landscapes around Byron provided a great setting. I wanted to try something different; considering the light rain and strong winds, we started at The Pass before I challenged myself to set up a battery strobe in amongst the trees. I wanted to create something that felt lo-fi, natural, and not too composed; it’s not that I don’t like studio photography, I spent five years as an assistant on Profoto’s Pro-7As, (their workhorse released in 1998!) I just think that it has its place and often photographers rely too heavily on bulky equipment. I put a Profoto B1X on a small octabox, then switched to two small constant lights with a low Kelvin to give it that dusk glow. I think an essential part of flash photography is making sure. However, you light it so it doesn’t feel forced or unnatural. I would give myself a 6/10; if I were to do it again, I would probably go for a bigger softbox like this and a C-stand to push some more power out, but I think one of the most important practices is to make what you have work.
